My wife's Toshiba Portege R705-P35 started experiencing random and frequent shutdown/restarts.
I uninstalled Norton Internet Security and installed MS Security Essentials.
The laptop does not shutdown cleanly, and as stated previously does random shutdowns.
Windows 7 64-bit was installed on this machine when she got in in January.

Looking at the minidump file with WinDbg of the Debugging Tools for Windows shows the driver that is causing the crash is the thpdrv.sys:

The thpdrv.sys is a Toshiba HDD Protection driver..
The thpdrv.sys is dated June 29, 2009.
You could try uninstalling the HDD Protection software now installed and then install the latest available for your laptop from Toshiba

Tweak IE Options

• Open Internet Explorer.
• Go to "Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab".
• Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions".
• Click "Apply".
  
• Reboot your computer.
