Date won't show correct format

I have an Excel sheet that has suddenly converted all dates to the number format.  I've tried resetting the column and resetting individual cells to Date format, but it still displays, for instance, 40141 instead of 11/24/2009.  I've also tried copying
the numbers into a new column using Paste Special and Value, but no dice.  The formula bar (the white box next to the fx button, that displays the cell contents) shows the dates in the date format that I want, but the sheet itself insists on displaying the
number assigned to that date.
 I'm using Excel 2007 and the OS is Windows 7 Professional.
