Cannot open ANY of my Programs when I click START button- none of the Programs in "All Programs", either

<p></p><p>cannot open any of my start up programs or ANY of my PROGRAMS.
 the icon for all my programs changed a couple times (they are all the same icon now)  when i was working with
Adobe Reader and now when i try to open any program they all open with a big dark gray square with the words INVALID IMAGE & it says at the top of the gray square the name of the program i am trying to open plus " Picasa Photo Viewer".
The icons
in start menu and in "All Programs" are all the same & at one time they had changed to AOL icon & would not open as well.

As per the description, I understand that all the icons on your desktop changes to one (Adobe, AOL etc.), and you are not able to open any of your startup programs.
Adobe reader opens with dark gray squares at the place of pictures and error message
“Invalid Image”.
I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

Were there any significant software or hardware changes made prior this issue?Is this issue with all Non-Microsoft (Third Party) programs or all the programs on your computer?
Let’s reset the icon cache and check if that solves the problem.

Follow the steps below to reset the Icon’s cache.
Right click on empty area of the desktop and click on
Personalize.Click on the Display Properties link.Under Colors, select Medium (16-bit) and click on Apply.
NOTE: If you already have Medium (16-bit) selected, then select Highest (32-bit) instead.
Sometimes you will need to do a restart first, then proceed to step.Try both ways.Click yes to confirm the new settings.Now, select Highest (32-bit) and click on OK.
NOTE: If you already have Highest (32-bit) selected, then select Medium (16-bit) instead.

Yes to confirm the new settings.
If resetting icon’s cache does not help, follow the steps to rebuild icon’s cache.
Click Start, then control panel and in the search box type
Folder options.Now click Folder Options to open and select (dot) Show hidden files and folders.Open a Windows Explorer window.Go to C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\LocalRight click on IconCache.db and click on
Delete.Click on Yes to confirm the deletion.
NOTE: This deletes the file to the Recycle Bin.
It is safe to empty the Recycle Bin when finished.Close the window.Empty the Recycle Bin.Restart the computer.When you go back, you will notice the Size of the
IconCache.db file is smaller, and the Date Modified is now the current date.
NOTE: If for some reason IconCache.db is not there or the size has not changed much then you may just restart the computer again.
You may need to restart a couple of times in some cases.The icon cache will get rebuilt.
If the issue persists, I would also suggest you to
Scan your computer with Microsoft Safety Scanner, just to make sure that your computer is free of all infections.

Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.
