Can you make the taskbar icons smaller in Windows 7?

I'm installing my favorite programs on a new computer, putting them on the taskbar, and it's getting filled up.

I'd like to make each icon/tile smaller -- that is, make each one a little thinner.  In terms of width, it seems like the icon itself only takes up about half the space.  I'd like to get rid of some of the wasted space.

I already use small icons.
