Original title: logoff problems
Windows 7 SP1 x32 bit.
within the last month am unable to logoff from any account, the desktop disappears as norm.
and the screen goes black, the monitor standby light (amber) illuminates and that's it it doesn't continue to the logon screen.
I can shut
down or restart with no problems, the only thing I can do in the hung logoff mode is force shut down with the on/off button, all restarts from there are normal.
I have tried clean boot options to no avail, can anyone help?

Hi again RajithR, Ok the closing chapter of the saga, Lavasoft suggested that it might be a compatability problem with Avira and Ad aware so I reinstated Ad aware with msconfig and removed Avira, the problem returned, so I disabled Adaware in msconfig
and reinstalled Avira from file Hippo (great site!), I then removed Ad aware using control panel and cleaned the computer of the debris with **** cleaner ( from file hippo super app!) then I perfomed a full scan with Avira and backed up the computer to and
external drive.
Then next move was to reinstall Adaware from file hippo (hooray!) and carry out an update on it and a full sacn with it, all went well and then the acid test could I log off or switch user? YEEES!! I can only suppose that either Lavasoft have
included a change in their latest update which cures my problem or a previous update had not taken properly on my computer.
And they all lived happily ever after.
yeah right.

anyone who suffers the same or similar problem, I think Ad aware is a worthwile app it cured a problem I had previously ( earlier thread re access to hotmail ) so I have retained it, lets hope that it isn't a mistake! Once again many thanks Terry B

Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION keys is not recommended unless you are PC service professional. Incorrectly editing your registry can stop your PC from functioning and create irreversible damage to your operating system. In fact, one misplaced comma can prevent your PC from booting entirely!

Caution: Unless you an advanced PC user, we DO NOT recommend editing the Windows registry manually. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. To manually repair your Windows registry, first you need to create a backup by exporting a portion of the registry related to MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION (eg. Windows Operating System):

Click the Start button.
Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
Click Yes.
A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
From the File menu, choose Export.
In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
Click Save.
The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.
