Cannot make Word 2010 default program in W7 Starter

New computer w/ W7 Starter.
Bought/installed Office 2010 Home & Student.
Rebooted.
Email attachments like .doc and .docx will not open w/ error that there is no default program.
Go to default programs but no component of Office 2010 is available to associate
with these extensions.
Tried Browse but cannot get Office 12 added as default program.
What do I do?

Are you using a click-to-run version or a full version of Office 2010 Home & Student.
You can easily check by going to the Windows Start menu.
Look for "Microsoft Office Word 2010".
Right-click on it, and choose "Properties".
Where does the shortcut point to? If it points to "winword.exe" then you have the full version installed.
If it points
to some program called "cvh.exe" then you have the click-to-run version installed.
